About the Journal

Kawanad: Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (KJPKM) (E-ISSN: 2830-0041 | P-ISSN: 2830-0033) is a peer-reviewed, open-access scholarly journal published by Yayasan Kawanad, Indonesia. The journal is published biannually in March and October. Articles are accepted and published in Indonesian or English, and every article includes bilingual (English and Indonesian) abstracts. Focus and Scope

Kawanad: Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (KJPKM) is a peer-reviewed and open-access journal dedicated to publishing community service and engagement activities. The journal documents and evaluates how knowledge, skills, and technology are brought to communities to solve real local problems, with attention to methods, outcomes, sustainability, and lessons that other practitioners can replicate.

Aims of the journal:

• To disseminate community service programs that respond to the real needs of communities in Indonesia and the wider region.
• To document community engagement methods, models, and impact so they can be replicated and improved by other practitioners.
• To connect higher education, schools, government, and community organizations in collaborative service activities.
• To encourage service programs that are measurable, ethical, inclusive, and sustainable.
• To widen access to community service outputs through open access in Indonesian and English.

All published articles are assigned a permanent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) via Crossref, ensuring worldwide discoverability, citation persistence, and reliable scholarly linking. All articles are freely accessible and published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

The journal's scope encompasses, but is not limited to, the following core thematic clusters:

• Community Empowerment: Participatory development, village and community capacity building, food security, welfare improvement, and community-based programs.
• Education & Learning Support: Teacher training, innovative learning models, school mentoring, literacy and reading programs, and counseling services.

• Technology & Digital Literacy: ICT-based empowerment, digital skills training, digital participation, and the use of applications for community needs.
• Local Economy & Small Business Development: MSME mentoring, creative economy, product development, marketing, financial literacy, and local resource utilization.
• Environmental Sustainability: Waste management, ecological conservation, coastal community resilience, renewable resources, and disaster awareness.
• Gender & Social Inclusion: Gender equality, youth and family strengthening, support for vulnerable groups, and inclusive community participation.
• Human Resource Capacity Building: Training and skill development, professional competence, institutional management, and leadership in community organizations.

Authorship Criteria & Contributor Standards

Authorship in KJPKM must be grounded exclusively on substantive intellectual, conceptual, and empirical contributions to the research. In alignment with COPE standards and the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) framework, all listed authors must fulfill all four standard criteria:

• Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work, or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data;
• Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content;
• Final approval of the version to be published; and
• Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to accuracy or integrity are appropriately resolved.

Contributors who provided purely administrative, financial, or routine technical assistance must be acknowledged in an Acknowledgements section rather than listed as authors. Ghost authorship, guest authorship, and honorary authorship are strictly prohibited.

Language Policy

KJPKM accepts manuscripts written in Indonesian or English. Regardless of the language of the main text, every manuscript must include an abstract in both English and Indonesian. Authors may use the English or Indonesian article template available in the sidebar. Manuscripts must be written in clear, grammatically correct, and academically appropriate language; the editorial team may return submissions that require substantial language improvement before review.

Peer Review Process & Workflow

Submitted manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All manuscripts undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process conducted by at least two independent reviewers with expertise in the relevant subject area.

KJPKM strives for a rigorous yet efficient review process. On average, authors can expect a first decision within 5 days, a peer review period of 14 days, a total submission-to-acceptance time of approximately 30 days, and publication within 10 days of acceptance. The journal is committed to a fair, transparent, and timely review process in accordance with best practices recommended by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). To ensure complete editorial accountability, articles published from Volume 6 (2027) onward will explicitly feature the complete genesis history (Received, Revised, Accepted, and Published dates).

Special Issue Policy

KJPKM periodically publishes Special Issues dedicated to emerging and high-impact topics in community service and engagement. Special Issues are guest-edited by recognized experts and undergo the same rigorous double-blind peer review process as regular submissions.

Proposals for Special Issues should include:

• A clear title and description of the proposed interdisciplinary theme;
• Relevance to the journal's scope and contemporary national/global research trends;
• Names, institutional affiliations, and Scopus/ORCID profiles of proposed Guest Editors;
• Proposed milestone timeline for submission, review, and publication.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

KJPKM recognizes the constructive assistance offered by Artificial Intelligence tools in scholarly writing while safeguarding academic transparency. The following policy applies to all submissions:

• Transparent Disclosure: Authors must provide an explicit statement prior to References indicating whether or not AI-assisted tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Grammarly AI, DeepL, QuillBot, Perplexity) were utilized during the preparation of the manuscript. When used, the statement must name the tool, its version, and the purpose of use.
• AI Authorship Preclusion: In alignment with COPE standards, AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because non-human software cannot assume legal or ethical accountability for research assertions.
• Author Ownership & Integrity: Authors maintain full intellectual ownership and legal responsibility for the factual integrity, empirical datasets, citations, and originality of their published work, including the verification of any AI-assisted output.
• Permitted Scope: The use of AI is welcomed strictly for proofreading, translation support, grammar, and stylistic enhancement. Methodological designs, empirical data analyses, and substantive conclusions must reflect the authors' own scholarly synthesis.
• Prohibited Use: AI tools must not be used to fabricate data, generate fictitious references, or create or alter images and results in a manner that misrepresents the research.
• Reviewers & Editors: Confidential manuscripts must not be uploaded to public AI tools during the review and editorial process.

This policy is fully harmonized with the position statement of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Publication Frequency & Scheduling

Kawanad: Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (KJPKM) is published two times a year (biannual) — March and October. Each issue features a carefully curated collection of peer-reviewed articles and case reports covering the multifaceted domains of community service and engagement. Open Access Statement

KJPKM is an immediate and permanent Open Access journal. All published content is freely available online immediately upon release, without subscription, registration, or pay-per-view fees. Readers are permitted to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to full texts of articles, consistent with the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI).

Article Processing Charges (APC)

KJPKM operates an author-pays Open Access model supported by an Article Processing Charge (APC). The fee directly covers professional peer review management, Crossref DOI maintenance, PDF typesetting, anti-plagiarism screening, and perpetual digital repository archiving.

Once a manuscript has been formally accepted and production typesetting begins, APC payments are non-refundable.

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

All articles published in KJPKM are assigned a unique, permanent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) with the prefix 10.56347 via Crossref, ensuring persistent digital linking and verified citation tracking across scholarly indexing databases. DOIs are registered upon final publication.

Copyright and Licensing Terms

Authors who publish in KJPKM retain full copyright of their work, granting the journal right of first publication. All articles are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), which permits use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are properly credited.

Plagiarism & AI Screening Policy

KJPKM maintains zero tolerance for plagiarism, data fabrication, or academic misconduct. All submitted manuscripts are screened using iThenticate, Turnitin, and Copyleaks before entering peer review.

Publication Ethics & Integrity

KJPKM is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics for authors, reviewers, and editors in accordance with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Our publication ethics framework governs author duties (CRediT taxonomy), reviewer independence, conflict of interest disclosures, and retraction procedures. Conflict of Interest Policy

All authors, peer reviewers, and editors must disclose any potential financial, personal, or institutional conflicts of interest that could compromise the integrity or objectivity of the research:

• Authors: Must include an explicit Conflict of Interest Statement prior to References disclosing financial grants, corporate consultancies, or affirming their absence.
• Reviewers: Must immediately decline to evaluate manuscripts involving recent collaborators, department colleagues, or competing commercial stakes.
• Editors: Must recuse themselves from handling submissions where personal, institutional, or financial conflicts exist.

Post-Publication Discussions, Corrections & Retractions

KJPKM is committed to maintaining the integrity of the scholarly record and strictly executes the COPE Retraction Guidelines:

• Silent Corrections: Minor typographical or layout fixes that do not alter scientific findings are updated directly in the galleys.
• Corrigendum / Erratum: Issued when a substantive typographical, calculation, or data error is identified that does not compromise overall findings.
• Retraction: Enacted when a published article contains proven data fabrication, falsification, unreferenced plagiarism, or severe ethical violations. Retracted PDFs are retained in the archive watermarked "RETRACTED" on every page to preserve scholarly history.
• Expression of Concern: Published when conclusive evidence of misconduct is under active institutional investigation.

Digital Preservation & Self-Archiving

KJPKM is dedicated to the perpetual preservation and worldwide accessibility of its published scholarship. The journal participates in distributed archiving networks:

• LOCKSS — Enabling participating libraries to collect, preserve, and restore decentralized archives.
• CLOCKSS — Guaranteeing large-scale digital preservation across global dark archives.
• PKP Preservation Network (PKP-PN) — Providing automated distributed preservation for OJS journals.

Authors are permitted and encouraged to self-archive the published version (Publisher's PDF) in institutional repositories, subject archives, and personal scientific profiles.

Ownership & Management Information

Kawanad: Jurnal Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (KJPKM) is owned, managed, and published by Yayasan Kawanad, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Yayasan Kawanad provides the administrative, financial, and technical infrastructure required to sustain the journal's publication standards, editorial independence, and long-term digital preservation.

Journal History & Development

• Founding Phase (2022): KJPKM opened with Volume 1, published in the March and October 2022 editions. The first issues documented community service practices responding to real local needs, from innovative learning mentoring in elementary schools and children's reading gardens to creative economy and ICT-based community empowerment.
• Steady Growth (2023–2024): With a stable twice-yearly rhythm, the journal broadened its coverage to include food security and welfare, health education such as self-medication awareness, gender equality and digital participation, and ecological waste management in villages.
• Editorial Restructuring (2025): Yayasan Kawanad restructured the editorial boards and reviewer pools across its journals to strengthen editorial quality, subject expertise, and review independence.
• Expanded Thematic Reach (2025): Volume 4 featured halal slaughter training, and strengthening the capacity of adolescents, families, MSMEs, and coastal communities, including counseling services for juvenile correctional institutions.
• Cross-Sector Engagement (2026): Volume 5 covered education, technology, human resource governance, the local economy, and community empowerment across regions, including competency strengthening for guidance and counseling teachers.
• Bilingual Publication (2025–2026): The journal publishes articles in both Indonesian and English, supported by bilingual (English and Indonesian) abstracts, to widen global readership while keeping local relevance.
• New Accreditation – SINTA 5 (March 2025): KJPKM (P-ISSN 2830-0033) obtained new accreditation at Rank 5 under the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology No. 10/C/C3/DT.05.00/2025 dated 21 March 2025, covering Volume 1 Number 1 (2022) through Volume 5 Number 2 (2026).
• Accreditation Maintained – SINTA 5 (July 2026): Pursuant to the Decree of the Director General of Science and Technology No. 355/DST/D.D1/HM.01.01/2026 dated 24 July 2026 and Letter No. 862/DST/D.D1/HM.01.01/2026 dated 28 July 2026, KJPKM retained its SINTA 5 accreditation, with validity spanning from 2025 through 2030. • OJS Infrastructure & Interface Upgrade (2026): The journal completed an infrastructure upgrade to Open Journal Systems (OJS) version 3.4.0-10 together with a redesigned, more responsive web interface, improving system security, metadata interoperability, and submission workflow efficiency.
• Persistent Identifiers – ROR & ORCID (2026): The OJS portal integrates ROR ID (Research Organization Registry) to standardize author affiliation data, and phases in ORCID iD integration for authors as a step toward full mandatory use in the future.
• Standardized Template & Mandatory Disclosures (Target 2027): The updated manuscript template is scheduled for release at the end of November 2026 and will apply to all articles projected for publication from Volume 6 in 2027 onward. This milestone ensures end-to-end genesis dating, strict PDF-to-web metadata consistency, and mandatory fourfold author disclosures (AI disclosure, author contributions, funding sources, and competing interests).
